and i know that we've still got time but i do not think we're invincible and i'm thinking that it's a sign deep breaths, clenched fists, here comes another juggernaut

facts
● sun, sea and sangria. estartit, spain was more of a tourist destination than anything else, a place to relax and enjoy both for locals and tourists alike. for one middle-aged couple who were going through some hard times financially, however, relaxation was no longer on the plate when the lady of the pair made that dreaded announcement one morning. "i'm late." with the rest of their children nearly grown up already and a business steadily going down the drain, the new child was an unforeseen and inconvenient prospect. countless discussions about how on earth they could afford to raise it resulted in arguments, disagreements about whether or not keeping the baby was feasible but the woman already knew she couldn't give it up. even if she didn't know the colour of its eyes or the feeling of its skin or even the gender, she did know that she had already fallen in love with the bundle of joy that was growing inside of her.

● relentless fighting came to a head on the tenth of february 1988 when another unwelcome statement was made - "my waters just broke." in a panic, the couple rushed to the nearest hospital, all arguments forgotten with only two things on their mind. for the man, his worry was about his wife's health. for her, all she could think of was her baby. it was going to be early; too early to survive? what if it hadn't developed properly? surely it was too soon. but all the worry in the world could not prolong the inevitable or change facts. that baby was coming whether the couple was ready for it or not.

● just hours later, "that baby" turned out to be a little boy. although he wasn't without his fair share of health problems as all premature babies tend to be, and he was a lot smaller than he should have been, the main problems lay in the family. despite what his mother had thought during her pregnancy, the baby's father didn't actually come round. in fact, things got progressively worse when the baby was allowed to go home a few months later and the business brought in even less money than it had before. tempers ran as high as the bills that were almost impossible to pay and fights escalated almost to the point of physicality. and yet somehow they managed for one month, two months, three months and even four. in fact, everything was manageable until it was nearing the baby's second birthday and the business finally did what it had been threatening to for so long - it buckled. the fighting got worse than ever and with no means of an income, rosco's mother finally did what she knew was best for the toddler; she put him up for adoption.

● although he was only barely speaking anyway, the change was a big one. not only did ros have to adjust to a new family, the new family happened to live in a new country and he was uprooted to venice, italy. the new family - the giulianos - already had kids of their own, mainly adopted, and although their family was much larger than the one he had left, relations were in a much better order. there was no denying that the first few months were tough, with the young boy refusing point blank to eat or sleep until he had no other choice, but he did eventually settle into quite a happy routine. not that it wasn't due for numerous changes over the years, however; he wasn't the last child to be adopted by the giulianos or created naturally. far from it. as it turned out, rosco was splat in the middle of a rather large family consisting of eleven children.

● other than the initial couple of years, ros' childhood was a happy one. in spite of (or perhaps because of) the ridiculously sized family, he was never lonely and the area they lived in was full of relatives of his parents. get togethers were frequent and fun and aside from his older brother [info]samuele trying to throw him into a canal here or there, everything was normal. well, as normal as normal could be in such a large family, anyway, until another monumental change came about in ros' life. having gathered the whole extended family in their grandmother's dining room because it was the largest by far, ros' father announced that he was moving his wife and children to america. longport, new jersey to be specific. while they weren't too tight for money, the company he worked for was to be moving and the financial benefits were not to be struck off because of a simple thing like distance. besides, they already had family there in [info]karoline and [info]vacio's parents.

● unfortunately the stress of moving to a new country didn't do a lot for the younger kids, and ten year old rosco didn't have a word of english in his vocabulary at the time. although he didn't make many friends within the first few weeks of living in longport - he couldn't possibly communicate enough to do so - he did discover stress, and a means with which to stifle it as much as possible: nicotine. certainly unhealthy, it did what it was meant to and even if it didn't help much with the language barrier, it did help his stress levels.

● besides, a solution to the language problem soon came in the form of [info]sarkozi. while ros didn't have very much english, he did have enough french to communicate with him and this proved a very useful factor in life very quickly. some of the local kids didn't much appreciate the young foreigner and snide remarks were common. however, [info]sarkozi's temper was quick, too, and he was quick to react on ros' behalf. the two struck up an immediate friendship after that and were soon stuck fast to one another's hips. as they grew up, they experienced a lot of firsts together and tended to believe that their friendship was fate - even their birthday fell on the same day.

● although ros did grow more familiar with the english language as time went on, he was never quite as outgoing as the other kids in middle school and preferred to sit in the background, hoping for all attention to drift over his head. for the most part, this worked, and worked well until he entered high school and his whole world turned upside down. with a more demanding study regime and more people to impress, ros soon fell victim to something that more vulnerable students sometimes do - so-called "study drugs". they enabled him both to maintain decent grades and to forge a social life for himself.

● this social life, built on the typical teenage trends of partying and alcohol, greatly outlived the trend of study drugs. it hadn't taken long for ros to grow completely dependent on them and in spite of the chemicals in his body, he wasn't entirely stupid. he knew he had a problem and he knew what he had to do about it, so without wasting any time, he cut himself off from them completely. quitting cold turkey was excruciating, but not impossible and he managed it somehow. unfortunately, this wasn't without sacrifice. his grades slipped, as did his attendance, but hey - his social life was still just fine and that was quickly becoming more important to him.

● although the move to america had initially meant that any financial issues could be dealt with swiftly, in the giuliano household it was only to be expected that there was never going to be too much spare money to throw around. although the kids always got what they needed, extra money was always appreciated and so as soon as rosco turned sixteen, he got his first job. kfc wasn't where he had envisioned himself working but it put spare money in his pocket... for the couple of weeks he stayed there. unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) through some minor freak accident, he soon broke a bone in his neck and ultimately ended up quitting not all that long after he started. once that had healed up, he found a job at a candy store. this seemed a lot safer, and started out really well. unfortunately, the boy couldn't stop eating the candy and soon lost that job, too.

● shortly before ros turned seventeen, a family friend offered him a job in a pet store. to be fair, ros hadn't really shared the best experiences with animals as he had grown up, having been bitten by all types until he had grown wary enough to know to avoid them. desperation had set in, however, so he accepted it - and soon discovered that animals weren't half as bad as he had previously decided. in fact, he quite liked them. it probably helped that he worked in what he soon discovered was no ordinary pet store. as a matter of fact many of the animals being sold were illegal in the state and it was by sheer miracle that they were never shut down.

● besides holding down a job, another thing ros hadn't been good at holding down in high school was a relationship. jumping from one girl to another (with some boys, too, but they were very few and very far between) was much easier, until his senior year when he met [info]ayre, who he once swore he would spend the rest of his life with. they were together for almost a year when something that sometimes happens to young couples happened. she thought she was pregnant, and in her confusion and panic, she told ros. she wasn't the only one who was terrified by the news, and in an attempt to gather himself together and fix the situation, he decided it was best to propose. however, she didn't agree. she said no, no, a thousand times no. she told him that there was no baby and to get out of her life.

● broken hearted was not a strong enough expression to describe his emotions after this but he did what he always did - he tried to plough through it and ignore what had happened. it worked, for a little while. he even started university that fall but two weeks in, he realized that covering up the wound was not going to make it heal. instead of completing that year or even that semester, he decided to withdraw and start a year late. barely eighteen, he knew he wasn't ready for college. what he really needed to do was see the world, and that was what he went to do.

● hardly the most responsible of boys, it was amazing his parents agreed to let him venture so far from home on his own, especially on a whim. but it wasn't unlike him to decide to do it and they wondered if the experience would help him to grow up a bit. spending a couple of weeks at most in any given place, ros managed to see almost every continent, avoiding only antartica (deciding it was far too cold and not quite enough fun for him, somewhere to leave until he was older and not alone) and australia (snakes and large insects were never his favorites) while he did return to longport the following year with a bright grin, a lot lighter than he had been and with more knowledge of the world, only a fool would have thought that he was any more responsible than he had been when he had boarded his first plane alone.

● however, just because he hadn't matured didn't mean he didn't think he was ready for adult responsibilities! soon after returning home, he finally began college properly, majoring in mechanical engineering. this was also when he and [info]sarkozi moved in together and bought a small puppy which they affectionately named "uranus". although the dog turned out to be a great idea, living together did not. they were too interested in booze and other items that weren't all that important and after a few weeks of more or less starving and having trouble paying their rent, they were finally kicked out of their humble home.

● not put off by his first attempt at living alone and putting it down to the fact that neither [info]sarkozi nor himself were all too motivated, ros tried again, this time answering a craigslist advertisement and he found himself living with [info]drystan. ros had been correct in his assumption that his first try at living without his parents shouldn't have been taken as a sign that it would never work, because this time he did not get kicked out. a few months later, [info]drystan's fiancé, [info]dannydivi, joined them and along with a multitude of animals, the three lived together for a number of months with various guests coming and going until the couple moved into their own house.

● stress levels, bad decisions and a habit ros should never have picked up on mounted around this time, none related of course and despite trying his best to hold up, for the first time in his life he truly buckled. mistrusting of those around him and a mere shadow of his former self, ros turned to the one person he had always depended on - [info]samuele. as he was at home in venice, however, the distance made matters worse and eventually ros decided that some time out was necessary. without bothering to tell even his closest friends, ros upped and left new jersey with no warning. while he had never condoned running away from problems, he had never condoned being in self destruct mode, either.

● after a few weeks at their grandparents' home in venice, ros and [info]samuele took the time to visit some other countries and, essentially, ros spent those couple of months drinking. as it turned out, while his liver may have disagreed this was probably the best thing ros could have done for himself at the time. the more fun he had, the more in touch ros got with his old self and the more he realized that he didn't need to run away from things any longer. what's more, in a rural club in the south of france one night, the boys randomly made what was to be one of their best friends; keith [info]buckminster. while it did seem odd that he was willing to move to a different continent to be with three friends he made while completely hammered, ros had absolutely no reservations about bringing him.

● and so the three returned to longport not long after christmas. new years bring new beginnings, which was exactly what ros felt was needed for him. some things didn't change, such as his job at the pet store and the fact that he was never going to change his major or drop out of college. however, and perhaps rather riskily, he and [info]sarkozi decided to try to live together again (for the sake of the dog) and this time, it seems to be working out just fine.
